CX 8.0 Beta 1 Tested - we are go

Here's your multi-click, keystroke-laden solution:
rMactor Setup Guide

**EDIT** It appears CX 8 b1 is for CX customers only, and not a 'general-public' beta. The guide still applies to CX 7 Standard and Games versions, albeit with keyboard-only support and inferior performance. When it does public, however... watch out!

  1. Hi Dandy,

looks like one needs to have purchased a product from Codeweavers in order to have access to the beta 8.0. Can you shed some light at this?

  2. ALAS, this appears to be true. I guess I was misled by the "public beta" nomenclature...editing post.

  3. Hey Tomte, so there is at least 3 redlinners peaking in here. That's good. Wonder if everyone else is just not interested at all. ???

  4. and peaking might be a freudian slip ... ;)

  5. I was trying out rFactor all Friday, playing with tire pressures and what else, slowly adding parts to one of the build-in cars. I'm still on the demo version, while looking for a good offer to buy this game.

  6. D-

I see v8 is out of beta.. I'm thinking I'll pony up for the Professional version, which includes Crossover Games. Can you say anything about performance/surprises/disappointments etc. with the release version?

    Thx,

    Kenners

  8. I haven't noticed any improvement between CO Standard and CO Games while using rFactor. I'd recommend testing both versions before purchase. Pro includes the Games version, though the premium price is for multi-user features and extended support.

I haven't tested the release yet, but everything leading up to it has worked well. It's not on par with Windows, but it's close.

Known Issues: DX 8 shading only, generic USB controller support, so no split gas/throttle axis, as the momo driver won't install. I drove it this way for a while, it's not bad, saves on brake temps ;) But for this reason, I still go to Boot Camp.

  9. I have a boot camp partition also. I assume you have rFactor installed twice, once in a bottle and once on Boot Camp; same serial number work for both?

    Thx,

    Kenners

  10. Yes, though the site specifies it will only re-activate 5 times automatically before you're required to contact support for more (free) re-activations.

  11. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by the add on content. It appears that all the different mods out there make it unlikely you'd find an online race that you'd have the exact same mods as others.. I take it the ability to "download all the plugins" so there's no "dfm" is nigh impossible in rFactor? And - I saw this somewhere - who do you race with? How does one hook up? And is there guidance (within a league or whatever) as to "get these mods" so everyone works together?

    Thx,

    Kenners

  12. Whoa, sorry for the very late reply -- a fine way to get started is to join the ubiquitous Megane races. They typically use the built-in track set and the Megane mod. After that, I've also run with drk racing...they have a website with the mod, and invite you on to teamspeak, where you can obtain the password for their mod. Otherwise, I just find the mod for the server I'm interested in on rfactorcentral.com.
I've found race2play.com offers great race organization with a download area mirroring rfc mods, I'm currently only running the BMW e21 series. For the most serious fun, however, check out virtualonlineracers.com for 44-racer 75-minute action. There's an easy but mildly tedious application process to get through, and the season is all but over, but I'd highly recommend this one. They also run a Saturday Endurance series, 4+ hours with driver swaps.
